Start by making every required PSP control respond once. You can refine sensitivity and shortcuts later. These instructions follow developer documentation; the example keyboard layout is a suggestion, not a measured performance recommendation.
Open control mapping
Open Settings → Controls → Control Mapping. The official control settings guide explains keyboard, gamepad and analog options. Connect a controller to Windows before mapping it; if Windows does not recognize it, the problem must be resolved before assigning emulator buttons.
A keyboard layout to start with
- Directional pad: arrow keys.
- Analog directions: W, A, S and D.
- Face buttons: choose four comfortable keys such as I, J, K and L, then note which PSP symbol each represents.
- Shoulder buttons: Q and E.
- Start and Select: Enter and Right Shift, if those keys do not conflict with your other bindings.
These are proposed assignments, not PPSSPP’s default keys. Map the control shown in the menu to the key you want. The analog stick and directional pad are separate controls, so a game may respond to one and not the other.
Using a gamepad
Assign the directional pad, left stick, four face buttons, two shoulder buttons, Start and Select deliberately. Follow the PSP symbol shown in the game rather than assuming every controller uses the same labels. Test menu movement and confirmation before entering a section that depends on fast input.
If inputs are missing or repeated
Click the PPSSPP window to give it focus. Check the “Ignore gamepads when not focused” setting if the controller appears to stop responding after switching windows. Review duplicate bindings before changing other settings. If the stick moves without input, investigate calibration and the deadzone rather than compensating with unrelated graphics settings.
Save progress before experimenting
Make an in-game save before testing shortcuts or changing mappings during play. Keep save-state shortcuts distinct from frequently pressed gameplay buttons. See save backups and return to the Windows setup guide for loading your first game.
