How to Find and Back Up PPSSPP Saves

Before reinstalling PPSSPP or moving to another computer, locate the folder your current installation actually uses. Guessing a path can lead you to back up an empty folder while your progress remains elsewhere.

Find the active folder

In PPSSPP, open Settings → System → PSP Memory Stick → Show Memory Stick folder. The developer’s Windows storage documentation explains why the location can differ between portable and installed configurations. Use the emulator’s own folder-opening command instead of assuming one location fits every PC.

Keep normal saves and save states distinct

Inside the emulated Memory Stick, PSP/SAVEDATA holds normal game saves. PSP/PPSSPP_STATE holds save states. These serve different purposes; a state snapshot is not a substitute for a game’s normal save. The PPSSPP FAQ describes these storage folders.

Make a backup

  • Save inside the game, then close PPSSPP so files are no longer being updated.
  • Copy the complete active Memory Stick folder to a separate location. Use a dated folder name so older backups remain identifiable.
  • Open the copied folder and check that the expected saved-data subfolders and files are present.
  • Keep the original until you have verified that your game can load from the intended setup.

Restore carefully

On the destination computer, first open PPSSPP and locate its active Memory Stick folder. Close the emulator. Back up anything already in that folder before copying your saved-data folders into it. If Windows asks about replacing files, stop and compare which copy contains the progress you want; do not automatically overwrite newer saves.

Start the same game edition and use its normal Load or Continue option. A region mismatch or a different active folder can look like a missing save. Do not delete the source backup after only seeing a file in Explorer—verify that the game can read it.

If the save still does not appear

Record the game ID, emulator version and exact folder location. Check that you did not create an extra nested PSP/PSP directory while copying. Consult our troubleshooting guide and preserve both copies while investigating. For a new setup, follow the Windows starting guide.
